Back cover:
Above Ground is a work of Living Fiction by contemporary authors engaged in a generative literary dialogue readers are welcome to join. These novel excerpts and stories range from romance with a ghost, to a modern Grapes-of-Wrath family quest, to lawlessness in a remote island ‘paradise’, to surfing the 'Outernet' of the collective unconscious. The variety and unexpected forms of the authors’ intelligence and wit is enthralling. Dedicated to bringing together diverse and extraordinary voices, the Above Ground anthology of Living Fiction is unique because it’s generative.

Proceeds from the sale of this book go to the Nobel Prize winning charity Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), an international medical humanitarian organization created by doctors and journalists in France in 1971.
Today, MSF provides aid in nearly 60 countries to people whose survival is threat-ened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe, primarily due to armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition, exclusion from healthcare, or natural disasters.

Proceeds also go to the Jubilee USA Network to break the chains of debt and feed children in over sixty countries. Jubilee works for responsible global lending practices and engages in public education, research, policy analysis, and advocacy.
“Though progress has been made, much remains to be done. For every ten dollars we send to poor countries in foreign aid, they send back more than 12 dollars in payments on old debts,” says Neil Watkins, Executive Director, Jubilee USA Network. Thanks to Jubilee’s debt relief work, African nations are investing $2 billion a year that they once sent away in debt payments, in schools, health clinics, and roads.
Jubilee is an alliance of more than 80 development agencies, think tanks, labor, environmental and human rights organizations, community and faith-based networks ― Christian, Jewish, and Muslim.
Most of the pieces in the anthology are excerpts of novels. In many cases, Harvard Square Editions (HSE) was able to engage award-winning authors and harvest the best twenty pages out of hundreds of pages of an author’s writing. Part of the anthology's attraction was that authors can use it as a tool to land bigger publishers for their entire manuscripts.
The group of recognized and new authors is donating net proceeds to the Nobel Prize winning charity Doctors
without Borders and Jubilee USA. Mostly Harvard and Yale alumni, the 19 authors, are holding book launches with readings at bookstores, and Harvard and Yale Clubs in several cities in the USA and Europe.
Above Ground is distributed by Baker and Taylor, and is available in bookstores and online at www.Amazon.com. Author book talks and signings have been scheduled at numerous Harvard and Yale Clubs and bookstores in the US and Europe.
